Every year, Wilmington-area homeowners spend time boarding windows and stocking supplies before a storm, and gutters rarely make the list. That’s a mistake — a clogged or damaged gutter system doesn’t just fail to help during a tropical storm or hurricane, it actively makes water intrusion worse at exactly the moment your roof and foundation need the most protection.

Why Gutters Matter More During a Storm, Not Less

A functioning gutter system moves a significant volume of water away from your roofline and foundation during heavy rain. When gutters are clogged or undersized, that water has nowhere productive to go — it backs up under roof shingles at the edge, overflows directly against siding, or pools right at the foundation instead of being carried away through downspouts. Given that coastal storms can dump rainfall rates well above what typical weather delivers, a gutter system that’s marginal on a normal day can fail outright during a tropical system.

What to Check Before Hurricane Season

Clear any debris sitting in the gutter channel from spring growth, since a partially clogged gutter can go from manageable to fully blocked once storm-driven debris adds to what’s already there. Check that downspouts drain freely rather than just looking clear at the top — a clog partway down a downspout isn’t visible from the ground but will cause the same overflow problems as a fully blocked gutter. Look for sections that are already sagging or pulling away from the fascia, since storm-force wind and rain volume will make an existing weak point fail faster than it would under normal conditions.

Downspout Extensions and Drainage

Make sure downspout extensions or splash blocks are directing water at least several feet away from your foundation. During a tropical system, a downspout dumping water directly against the foundation can contribute meaningfully to water intrusion in a crawl space or basement, on top of whatever rain is already saturating the ground.

After the Storm

Once conditions are safe, walk the property and look for gutter sections pulled loose by wind, downspouts knocked off at elbow joints, and any new sagging that wasn’t there before. We offer post-storm inspections specifically because damage isn’t always visible from the ground, and catching it early avoids a small fix becoming a bigger fascia or foundation repair.

Getting Ahead of Storm Season

The ideal time for a pre-storm gutter check is late spring, before the season’s first named storm, giving enough time to address any repairs or cleaning needed. If you’re already mid-season and haven’t had gutters checked, it’s still worth doing — better before the next system than after.
